Astor Wines – NYC

If you’re in the Big Apple, you may be familiar with Astor Wines & Spirits as it’s been a Greenwich Village fixture since 1946! Astor Wines stock a variety of affordable Bordeaux Wines. Some of the favorites are:

Château La Grolet “Les Vacances de Monsieur Merlot”, Peybonhomme – 2014 A charmingly, deliciously, fruited Merlot. This plummy Bordeaux brims over with farm stand fruit, ripe berries, and cool acidity. Medium-bodied and crowd-pleasing!

Château Rousselle “La Soif de Vincent”, Côtes de Bourg – 2013A red Bordeaux that quenches your thirst. This is all about delightful black fruit aromas and lithe tannins. Even drinks well slightly chilled. Excellent if you”re looking for Bordeaux that is more accessible and youthful in style. Very compatible with burgers or pastrami sandwiches. This Bordeaux is a Merlot & Malbec blend.

Château Haut-Bel-Air “Vieilles Vignes”, Côtes de Bourg – 2013A spicy red Bordeaux that”s aged in French oak for six months. Full of red and black fruit aromas. Excellent for pepper steak or a great plate of aged cheeses. A Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot blend.

Binnys – Chicago Area

For those of you in the Windy City, Binny’s Beverage Depot has a large collection of Bordeaux wines. Family owned since 1948, Binny”s is the Midwest”s largest wine, spirits, beer and cigar superstore.

Château Petit Figeac, Saint-Émilion – 2012Solid wine, featuring pomegranate, cherry paste and plum flavors, lined with anise, alder and iron notes. It has range and purity, with fresh fruit lingering on the finish. A red blend. 

Château La Tour Carnet, Haut Médoc – 2010The 2010 La Tour Carnet exhibits wonderful ripeness, a dense ruby/purple color, notes of licorice, camphor and some toast as well as lots of black currant and blueberry fruit. It is medium to full-bodied, with attractive sweetness of tannin, good acidity, excellent delineation to its component parts, and a full-bodied, impressively long finish. A red blend.

Château Subilaux, Bordeaux – 2014Grilled herbs, dark cherries, plums, smoke and tobacco are pushed forward in a fleshy, hearty Bordeaux best enjoyed in its youth. A red blend.

For LA locals, Wally’s Wines have an extensive range of Bordeaux wines to choose from. Some affordable favorites are:

Baron de Rothschild, Bordeaux Blanc – 2012Straw yellow and pale color with green glints. On the nose, the wine is aromatic and flattering, dominated by aromas of tropical and citrus fruits, like grapefruit and lime. In mouth, it is a lively and fresh wine that is easy to drink. The Sauvignon brings flavors and vivacity while Semillon gives fullness and balance at the end. Its generous character makes it an excellent accompaniment for fish and white meats.

Château Les Ormes de Pez, Saint-Estèphe – 2012This powerful wine is dense with rich tannins and black fruits that are balanced. Full and concentrated, it”s a wine with great potential. A Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot blend.

Chateau Croix Mouton, Bordeaux Supérieur – 2012The 2012 exhibits a deep ruby/blue/purple color along with attractive notes of toast, minerals and dark berry fruit. Medium-bodied, soft, round and velvety-textured. This wine is a 100% Merlot grape.
