Biodynamic viticulture

Biodynamic viticulture

Nowadays, a growing number of Bordeaux vineyards pay attention to the principles of biodynamic viticulture.

Demeter

Demeter is a European label attesting to biodynamic agriculture, whose name is a direct reference to the Greek goddess of fertility. Among its various requirements, two are particularly noteworthy:

  • A Demeter biodynamic wine is made from grapes grown according to the rhythm of the seasons and the lunar calendar;
  • The soils are treated according to the principles of “natural” fertilization or composting (such as cow manure).

Biodyvin

The Biodyvin label was created by French winegrowers. Like the Demeter label, it certifies wines produced according to the principles of biodynamic viticulture. In other words, it guarantees that:

  • Astrological influences are taken into account in viticultural practices;
  • Soils are nourished using plant, animal and mineral preparations, limiting the environmental footprint of winegrowers’ activities.

In 2019, 17 Bordeaux wine estates had obtained Biodyvin biodynamic certification, representing 403 hectares.
